If you are considering an implant-supported denture, you may have been told that you do not qualify for implants because of jaw recession. Fortunately, Dr. Kris Koelker proudly offers innovative IMTEC® mini dental implants at our Allen, TX, practice. Mini implants have a much smaller diameter than traditional posts. Therefore, they require less jawbone tissue for support. You may be a candidate for these implants if you have a compromised jawbone structure. IMTEC® mini implants can usually support a restoration immediately following placement.
What Are IMTEC® Mini Implants?
Like standard implants, mini implants are small posts made of biocompatible titanium. Once Dr. Koelker places these posts in your jaw, your bone will fuse to the titanium. In this way, the implants will actually replace your missing dental roots. However, IMTEC® mini implants are only 1.8 mm wide. In contrast, traditional posts can have a diameter of up to 3.5 mm. While traditional implants can support various types of restorations, including crowns and bridges, Dr. Koelker typically only uses mini implants to secure full dentures. Your restoration will snap directly onto the implant posts for a precise and comfortable fit.
IMTEC® mini implants are immediate-load implants, so Dr. Koelker can attach a denture on the day of your surgery.
Placing Mini Implants
The placement process for mini implants is less invasive than traditional implant surgery. Dr. Koelker will numb your gums, and he will usually provide deeper sedation as well. At the Dentist of Allen, you can choose from nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation. All options are very safe. Dr. Koelker will help you select the right method based on your overall health and personal preferences.
Once you are comfortable, Dr. Koelker will insert the implants through the gum tissue and into the jawbone. Once in place, he can attach your denture, which will provide immediately restored function and comfort.
The Benefits of Mini Implants
IMTEC® mini implants offer many benefits that may make them an outstanding option for you:
- Less invasive: Because mini implants are smaller, they will impact less of your jawbone. Therefore, your recovery will be faster, and you will experience less post-surgical discomfort. In fact, in some cases, you may be able to eat and chew gently an hour after your surgery.
- No need for bone grafting: If you have suffered jawbone recession, your dentist may need to perform a bone graft in preparation traditional implants. You would then have to wait an additional four to six months before you could undergo implant surgery. On the other hand, mini implants can often eliminate the need for this treatment. However, a bone graft may still be necessary if you have experienced pronounced jaw recession.
- Jawbone retention: With your implants in place, your jaw will receive the stimulation necessary to halt jaw atrophy.
- Convenience: IMTEC® mini implants are immediate-load implants, so Dr. Koelker can attach a denture on the day of your surgery. After you have healed, you will receive your permanent restoration. In the interim, however, you can enjoy a stable restoration and normal dental function.
